Edward Elric Automail

In the anime Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood the character Edward Elric has prosthetic limbs replacing his right arm and left leg referred to as Automail. These pictures show my process of patterning and and creation of Edward Elric's right arm fitted to my own measurements. Using a pattern I acquired online as well as my own measurements I resized the pattern to my body.
Once my pattern was finished and sized correctly, I cut the pieces of my pattern out from thin cardboard and checked size against my own measurements once more before gluing the pieces together with hot glue. With my pieces glued together the next step is to paint them the correct color. To do this I used hammered gray Rust-Oleum spray paint to give my pieces a more metallic appearance.
With my pieces painted and complete the final step was to put them together in a way that would be easy for me to wear during a convention as well as easy enough for me to put on and take off alone. To do this I used a black opera glove as a interior for the pieces and glued the pieces to the glove. In addition to this I used an elastic band to hold the shoulder base flush to my arm. In addition I used fabric snaps to hold the separate pieces, three in total, from moving once I was wearing the prop. I had a lot of fun working on this project as well as a lot of fun wearing this prop for cosplay videos and events.
